Electric vehicles have a lot going for them. The advantages of going electric have been clear enough that countries have been investing heavily to set up charging stations and incentivising new purchases of electric vehicles.
Electric vehicles are better than combustion engine products. Here are the biggest ones:
Electric vehicles are safer!
Electric vehicles are cleaner
Electric vehicles cost less to run
Electric Vehicles last longer
Should I subscribe/lease or buy an electric vehicle
Why are electric vehicles safer?
One key selling point is the fact that electric vehicles are much safer because they don't have any moving parts to suffer damage from debris. This is because there is no engine. There is a battery pack and motor(s) that run on the battery. No combustible fuel supply! Reducing the risk of burning. No gas tank makes them safer in case of a crash.
EV’s Are Less Flammable
Electric vehicles have parts that are housed inside a protective shield. whereas with a traditional car, these parts are exposed. Electric cars are powered with the world's best batteries. There are Lithium- ion powered, allowing upto 90% of the battery storage to be utilized. Protective underbody encasing shields the battery from damage. Whereas in Diesel and Petrol powered vehicles, the fuel tank is usually found in the rear underside of the vehicle. Fuel lines connect the tank to the engine in the front. Any of these can be ruptured and fuel leaks happen. This could potentially ignite and catch fire.
Electric Vehicles also have no motor oil storage as there is no engine! So another flammable liquid is kept out of the equation.
Better Safety Standards
Electric Vehicles perform much better at crash tests than combustion engine products. An example of this is the Tesla Model X. Not only did the Tesla Model X twice earn five-star safety ratings, but it continues to have the highest safety rating of all cars in the EURO NCAP safety tests of all time.
As quoted from Tesla website “Model X made history when it became the first and only SUV to ever receive a 5-star safety rating in every category and subcategory from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration”
Electric Vehicles from Indian and International manufacturers have all received much better safety ratings than their combustion engine counterparts.

Electric Vehicles are Cleaner
Traditional cars are bad for the environment, most notably with their harmful emissions. Electric cars are better for the environment because they do not emit greenhouse gasses. There are also a number of other environmental benefits to electric vehicles, such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, which are also likely to translate into safety and economic benefits.
One of the main benefits to electric cars and trucks is their reduced environmental and economic impact. This has been published in a number of studies, the most recent of which were conducted by the University of Michigan and concluded that electric cars can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
In the United States, greenhouse gas emissions from cars are projected to increase by about 50% from 2020 to 2030, according to a team of researchers from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The significant increase in gas emissions can be attributed to a variety of factors. The first is the lack of a clear, nationwide plan to incentivize the use of electric vehicles.
Electric cars are the number one environmentally sound car on the road. Globally, it’s estimated that 800 million gas-powered cars emit 10 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
There are plenty of good reasons to love electric vehicles. For one, they emit no exhaust fumes, so they cause no smog or aggravate asthma. They are also easier on the lungs of the driver, thanks to their lack of harmful emissions. Not only are they cheaper than most gas-powered vehicles, and they produce fewer emissions.
Electric Vehicles are Cheaper to Run
Electric vehicles cost less to run than combustion engine vehicles. The running costs of an average diesel engine vehicle is 6 to 7 rupees per km for a car.
The average cost per km for a Tata Nexon EV is less than 1 rupee per km. This is mainly attributed to two factors. Primarily the cost of electricity to power the vehicle. In India electricity costs between 6 and 7 rupees per Kwh. Secondly, servicing costs are 40% less than diesel and petrol engines. Mainly because there are hardly any moving parts. Battery, motors and some sensors. That’s basically it. No long fuel lines, transmission box, engine parts, dip sticks etc. Which means maintenance is super easy, fast and cheap.
Electric Vehicles Last Longer
With minimal moving parts and long lasting Lithium ion batteries, EV’s have fewer things that can go wrong! That’s right. In fact most manufacturers give a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty for 2 wheelers on the battery and motor. For cars this can be as long as 8 years! Though it won’t be an unlimited mileage warranty.
THese things are built to last and though you may find battery performance goes down with time, the motor continues to hold its own and as long as it’s kept free of dust and debris, it will continue to perform like a breeze.
Should you Subscribe/ Lease or Buy an Electric Vehicle
This is a big financial decision. Remember after a house, a vehicle is the second largest capital purchase a person can make. HOWEVER, unlike a house, a car or bike is a depreciating asset. This means it loses value over time, rather than gaining. So What you buy today isn't worth the same tomorrow, or in a year’s time. It's worth less…
Apart from this, ownership requires you to insure the vehicle, pay for servicing, maintenance ( replacement of parts), if the vehicle breaks down, it's your responsibility to have it fixed and then also pay for charging! So the fuel bill is yours to handle.
New forms of ownership such as SWYTCHD subscription is a hassle free way to get into electric vehicles. Enjoy all the benefits of traditional ownership, but none of the problems. A form of vehicle leasing, this is a 1-month commitment only. Allowing the subscriber to access top of the range models, for all in monthly free. Vehicle, insurance, servicing, breakdown and free charging are all included in 1 monthly fee. Best part, it’s a 1-month commitment only! At the end of the month you have a choice to continue, stop or switch. If you choose to switch, you can jump between new EV’s every month! Your neighbors will think you’re a millionaire. You can even switch from cars to bikes and vice versa, your payment either goes up or down, that’s it!
This allows the subscriber to try multiple ev's to find the best fit and decide if ev’s are the right choice for them or not. SWYTCHD even puts in a fast charging for free at your parking spot, home or apartment. Allowing you to do a full EV car charge from 4 to 8 hours depending on the car. In fact it’s so convenient that every time a new model comes out from a manufacturer, you can literally switch from the old model to the new one. WIthout having to sell a vehicle, do the paperwork, put down a deposit etc. It’s all from the comfort of your home!
On average you will save 2.7% on a SWYTCHD subscription compared to ownership. Plus all the benefits of low commitment, vehicle switching and free charging.
Think about it. It’s definitely worth the financial calculation, to see what works best for you :) Or just try a brand new EV out for a month and enjoy the experience, you have nothing to lose, only the freedom to switch!
